The Symbian Operating System is an operating system designed mainly for mobile devices. David Potter was the founder of Psion way back in the year 1980. Since then the Symbian company has grown tremendously releasing several version of operating systems.
The global smart phone market has never been so exciting. About 110 million symbian phones are manufactured and shipped to different parts of the World. In developing markets like Asia, the cell phones have found a lot of interest and are now appealing to the masses as well. Thus effectively Symbian’s market is growing rapidly all across the World.
Symbian OS 9.5 version is the latest version to have been released by the Symbian Operating System. It delivers more than seventy new features for high-performance. It is one of the most powerful smart phones at afforable market costs and an easy operating system with a friendly interface for everyone to use whether he is in Europe, America or in parts of Asia.
SymbianSymbian is currently primarily owned by the Finnish Maker Nokia which has a 48% stake holding in the company. Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, Panasonic, Siemens AG and Samsung also have a stake holding in Symbian Limited. Thus all the leading mobile phone manufacturers in the World employ the Symbian Operating System and is one of the most preferred operating system for mobile phones in the Market.
It is designed for the specific requirements of advanced 2.5Generation and 3Generation mobile phones. Symbian Operating System also provides numerous applications which can be used by the Customers like alarm Clocks, Calendars, Business tools, games, themes and numerous other applications.
Symbian OS is the leading OS in the smart mobile device market. It has a staggering 67% share of the smart mobile device market, with Microsoft, the giant having just 14% through Windows CE and Windows Mobile and RIM having 7%. In this market, Symbian is leading the way with other competitors like Palm OS, Linux, Qualcomm’s and Brew trailing far behind in terms of the number of the Customers using their respective operating systems world wide.
Symbian Operating System has been subject to a lot of viruses though. Cabir was one which haunted it for a long time. Usually these send themselves from phone to phone by Bluetooth. But, till date none of these viruses or malwares have been able to take advantage of any flaws in Symbian Operating System. Symbian is not Open Source software.
Symbian Operating system EKA2 enables high speed response which is because of a processor core that is able to cater to multiple application which are running at a time. Linux operating system does not have this feature. This has allowed Symbian OS EKA2 phones to become much smaller, cheaper and also more efficient in terms of power as compared to the operating systems provided by other major companies.
